Incentives are shifting. The math still works for owned systems on Oahu, but the timing matters.

What changed and what didn't

  • Federal residential tax credit ended December 31, 2025. Direct-ownership systems installed in 2026 no longer qualify for the federal 30%.
  • Hawaii's 35% state tax credit is still active, capped at $5,000 per single-family system. Senate Bill 3125 is currently pending and may reduce this credit, so timing matters.
  • Hawaii electricity rates remain the highest in the nation at roughly $0.38 per kWh. The financial case for owned solar plus battery is strong even without the federal credit.
  • HECO buyback rates under CGS+ are weak. Battery storage matters more now than ever, since you want to use what you make rather than sell it back at a poor rate.

One More Thing: Your Roof
