Class 4, wind-rated architectural shingle systems chosen for Hawaii conditions, installed by licensed local partner crews and documented start to finish.
Most single-family roofs on Oahu are asphalt shingle, and for good reason: a modern architectural shingle delivers strong wind performance at a price that makes sense for most homes, and it can be repaired section by section for decades. The catch is that not every shingle survives Hawaii. The product line, the fasteners, and the install details matter more here than almost anywhere on the mainland.
The UV index at sea level in Hawaii is among the highest in the United States, and it cooks the oils out of asphalt years faster than mainland averages. Salt in the trade winds corrodes cheap nails and flashing at every penetration. Wind works ridge caps and rakes loose a little at a time, every season. In practice a shingle sold with a 30-year label often gives Oahu homeowners closer to 15 to 20 years, and less than that on exposed coastal slopes. We tell you that up front, because the right response is not to avoid shingle. It is to spec the right one.
Two things are worth knowing before you pick a shingle. First, several Hawaii carriers offer premium discounts for Class 4 impact-rated roofs, so the better shingle can pay part of its own way. Second, if your current roof has documented storm or wind damage, your homeowners policy may cover the replacement, and your deductible is typically all you pay out of pocket. That is exactly what our claim assistance process establishes before you spend your own money on a new roof.
We are an independent roofing consultant, not the crew swinging the hammer. We inspect and document your roof free, help you understand whether insurance should be part of the conversation, then coordinate a trusted, locally licensed roofing contractor to do the installation. We stay on the job as your one point of contact from the first inspection to the final photo set. The contractors pay us for bringing them well-documented, ready-to-build jobs, so our inspection and coordination cost you nothing on top of your roof.
Honest answer: not always. On the North Shore, in Hawaii Kai, and on windward oceanfront lots, salt exposure can argue for standing-seam metal instead. In tile neighborhoods, matching the existing tile roof usually wins. For most central, leeward, and inland Oahu homes, a Class 4 architectural shingle is the best balance of cost, wind performance, and repairability. The free inspection is where we make that call with you, based on where your house actually sits.
