Every wind and rain event the National Weather Service recorded on Oahu since 1996, in one searchable place, with the official government record linked on every line. 612 storms. 1,104 individual weather records.
Oahu's weather history is public, complete, and almost impossible to actually use. It lives in a NOAA search form that wants you to already know which of forty event types to pick, on a county the form calls Honolulu and a set of forecast zones with names like Olomana and Ewa Plain. So people give up and guess. This page is that database, filtered to Oahu, sorted by date, and written out in plain language.
What an entry here shows, and what it does not
An entry in this table shows that the National Weather Service recorded a weather event in that area on that date. It does not show that any particular roof was damaged, and only an inspection of the roof itself can speak to that.
A gap is not proof that nothing happened. This database holds what NWS Honolulu wrote up, nothing more. Events are logged by county and by broad forecast zone, never house by house, and plenty of real damage never becomes a record at all. Read how complete this record is before you draw a conclusion from an empty date.
How to look up a date
- Search a month, a year, or a town. The box below reads every word of every record, including the towns the weather service named in its write-ups, so "Haleiwa", "Kaneohe", "Mililani" and "March 2026" all work.
- Open the storm. Each line expands to show the individual records behind it: what was recorded, where, anything that was measured, and what the weather service wrote at the time.
- Take the official link. Every record links to NOAA's own page for that event, and the record number is printed next to it. That link is the citation, not this page.
- Check for a federal declaration. If your date falls inside one of the declarations listed below, that changes what help exists outside your policy.
Nothing here for a very recent storm? NOAA publishes on a delay of roughly 75 to 90 days after the end of each month, so the last two or three months are normally not in yet. See how complete this record is.
Every recorded Oahu storm since 1996
Wind and rain events, the kind that damage roofs and building envelopes: hurricanes and tropical storms, high wind, strong wind, thunderstorm wind, tornadoes, waterspouts, funnel clouds, hail, lightning, heavy rain, flooding, flash flooding and debris flows. High surf and coastal flooding are recorded separately and are listed further down.
About the area names. These are the National Weather Service's own forecast zones, printed exactly as the record prints them. Oahu North Shore covers Haleiwa and Waialua through Pupukea and Kahuku. Olomana is windward Oahu, Kailua and Kaneohe through Waimanalo. Central Oahu is Mililani, Wahiawa, Waipahu and Pearl City. Ewa Plain is Kapolei and Ewa Beach. Waianae Coast runs Nanakuli to Makaha. Honolulu County means the record was filed island-wide rather than by zone. The plain-language descriptions are ours; the zone names are NOAA's.
About the damage figures. Where a record carries a dollar amount, it is whatever the local weather service staffer entered at the time. NOAA does not verify these, and they are broad estimates rather than measurements. Some are badly wrong, and where we found one we said so on the row.

Large boulders on Kamehameha Highway was closed the road in both directions. NOAA record 1323569
Mar 20 to 23, 2026Flash FloodHonolulu County$10 million reportedsee note on the damage figure
A cutoff low moved in from the northwest and pulled deep tropical moisture from the south over the Hawaiian islands. This led to the development of prolonged slow moving heavy rain and thunderstorms. The heavy rain and thunderstorms caused catastrophic flooding over Oahu's North Shore and Manoa Valley.
About the billion-dollar figure on this record. NOAA's database carries $1.00 billion in property damage on this single event. That is not this flood's damage. The record's own narrative ends "Damage exceeded $1 billion statewide," so the number is the statewide projection for both March 2026 storms across every island, entered on one Oahu row. The five sibling records in the same episode total about $22 million between them. No official dollar figure was ever published for the North Shore specifically, or for Oahu's private property. What is documented: catastrophic flash flooding hit Waialua and Haleiwa on March 20, 2026, both main roads into Haleiwa became impassable, roughly 5,500 residents were ordered to evacuate over the risk of Wahiawa Dam failing, 233 people were rescued across Oahu, and nobody died.
- Mar 20, 2026 Flash Flood, Honolulu County. At approximately 800 pm HST, a mesoscale convective system was observed moving over the Kauai Channel towards Oahu. At around 900 pm HST, this mesoscale convective system moved over the west side of Oahu, then the Northern half of Oahu, and began to deliver large amounts of heavy rain. Due to the slow moving nature of this weather system, enormous rain amounts accumulated in a very short time frame. At approximately 1000 pm HST, stream levels rose above flood thresholds and reservoirs filled up. From 1100 pm HST to 200 AM HST, a massive flood wave surged through the North Shore. Multiple roads became impassable across Northern Oahu, Haleiwa became completely cut off, and multiple homes and many cars got swept away in flood waters. Many homes and cars that were not washed away were heavily damaged beyond use or habitation. Businesses were also flooded, and an ambulance was reportedly lost due to the rising flood waters. With the help of police officers, the crew escaped the ambulance through the side window. There were over 200 rescues by first responders and residents, these rescues included rescues from police, fire, national guard, and lifeguards. 10 people were taken to the ER with non critical hypothermia due to prolonged exposure to the flood waters. Much of the destruction and rescues were reported in Waialua and Haleiwa. However the damage spread to the northeast section of Oahu where multiple homes were inundated with flood waters. Over 171 million dollars in damages were reported across Oahu's public schools from the Department of Education and officials put the total costs of the storm island wide above 1 billion dollars . NOAA record 1317872
- Mar 23, 2026 Flash Flood, Honolulu County. $10 million property damage reported. Heavy rain fell over the Koolau mountain range in the middle to later half of the morning, then a thunderstorm developed and anchored itself over the mountains. This thunderstorm then produced a large amount of rain in a short time frame, quickly overwhelming Manoa Stream and sending a flood surge down towards Manoa Valley. Manoa marketplace had nearly 2 feet of water and parked cars were inundated. Homes in Manoa reported flooding and an excavation site quickly became overwhelmed with water and sent mud and debris down the road. The overflowing Manoa and Palolo Streams inundated the entire campus of Hokulani Elementary School in St. Louis Heights and students were evacuated. Large boulders and debris were observed across many roads in Manoa Valley and flooding was also observed across the upper portion of the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus. A home was also flooded in Laie. NOAA record 1317873

How complete is this record
Most compiled tables quietly skip this part. We are printing it, because someone who searches 2025, finds almost nothing, and concludes it was a quiet year has been misled by a table that looked authoritative.
These are storms per year in the index above. They measure what NWS Honolulu wrote up and NOAA published. They do not measure how stormy the year was.

Three things those numbers do not say on their own.
- NOAA publishes on a delay. Storm data reaches the database roughly 75 to 90 days after the end of each month. The most recent months are always the thinnest and they fill in later.
- The counts fall off after 2022 and we are not going to invent a reason. The drop is in NOAA's own data. We do not know whether it reflects quieter years, a change in what gets written up, or a backlog, and nobody has published an answer. Treat recent years as incomplete rather than calm.
- Before 1996 there is almost nothing, and that is by design. See the hurricanes this database does not contain.
Federal disaster declarations covering Honolulu County
A federal declaration is not your insurance claim, and the two halves of one get mixed up constantly. Individual Assistance is the half that can put money in a homeowner's hands. Public Assistance pays government agencies to repair public infrastructure and does nothing for your roof. Public Assistance alone is by far the more common outcome, which is why a declared disaster so often turns out to mean nothing for the person whose house was damaged.

The hurricanes this database does not contain
Search this database for Hurricane Iniki, the September 1992 storm that is still the worst natural disaster in Hawaii's history, and you will find nothing. Search for Hurricane Iwa, November 1982, and you will find nothing. For the whole state of Hawaii, the year 1992 contains zero records.
That sounds like a scandal. It is not, and the reason matters if you are relying on this database for anything.
Hurricane Andrew is missing too. The same 1992 file that has no Iniki has no Andrew either, the storm that flattened south Florida three weeks earlier. Nationwide, that year holds only three kinds of event: hail, thunderstorm wind, and tornado. The Storm Events Database was built from paper publications, and for decades those publications only captured that narrow set. All of the event types you see on this page were only recorded from 1996 onward. It is an era gap in a national database, not an omission about Hawaii.
Two things follow. First, the correct way to say this is that the Storm Events Database has no record of Iniki, and never that NOAA has none. NOAA holds Iniki in other products, including its billion-dollar disasters dataset, which puts the storm at roughly $3.1 billion in 1992 dollars. Second, for anything before 1996 this page is the wrong source, and so is that database. Use the Central Pacific Hurricane Center's storm reports and NOAA's best-track records instead.
The pre-1996 Hawaii holdings in this database, for the record, come to 28 events between 1955 and 1995. Twenty-seven are tornadoes and one is a thunderstorm wind. Three of those tornadoes are Honolulu County in 1982, and none of them is Iwa. They sit outside the index above, which starts at 1996 for that reason. Both storms do appear in the federal declarations table, which is complete back to 1974.
Why the other storm lists come up short here
There are compiled Hawaii storm pages already. We checked them before building this, and the problem with all of them is the same: they were built for the mainland and then pointed at Hawaii.
- The severe-weather filter erases Oahu. The common approach is to count tornadoes, hail two inches or larger, and wind at 65 knots or more. That is a Great Plains filter. Applied to an island that rarely gets severe thunderstorms, it deletes high wind, strong wind, heavy rain, flash flooding and tropical storms, which is nearly everything that actually damages a roof here. One such page counts a few dozen damaging-wind events statewide across 75 years. This page holds 1,104 wind and rain records for Oahu alone since 1996.
- Rolling twelve-month windows cannot answer the question. Several storm pages aimed at roofing companies show only the last year, because they are built for door-knocking after a hailstorm. A leak that started in 2019 is invisible to them.
- Some of them are not searchable at all. On more than one, the dates exist only inside map pins and never as text on the page, so you cannot search for a date even when the data is there.
- The official curated pages stopped. The National Weather Service's own hand-written Hawaii event summaries are excellent and there are twenty of them; the most recent covers a Kona low in December 2021. Its live storm-report feed only holds the last thirty days and there is no archive behind it, so neither one can answer a question about an older date.
High surf and coastal flooding
Surf does not damage a roof, so these sit outside the main index. They are here because a coastal Oahu property can absolutely be damaged by surf and the date question is identical. This list covers only the coastal events where the weather service wrote something up or recorded damage, not every high surf advisory.

Where these records come from
Every row was generated by script from the sources below, then checked. A wrong date in a table that someone hands to an insurer is worse than no table at all.
- NOAA NCEI Storm Events Database. The storm rows come from NOAA's own bulk data files, filtered to Honolulu County and to every National Weather Service forecast zone covering Oahu: Oahu, Oahu North Shore, Oahu Koolau, Oahu South Shore, Waianae Coast, Waianae Mountains, Olomana, Central Oahu, East Honolulu, Ewa Plain, Honolulu Metro, Koolau Windward and Koolau Leeward. Other islands were excluded. Note that NOAA reused zone numbers over the years and spells Waianae Mountains as "Wainae" in its own data, so a filter built on zone numbers alone quietly returns the wrong island.
- FEMA OpenFEMA Disaster Declarations Summaries. Every record in that dataset designating Honolulu County.
- NWS Honolulu Local Storm Reports. A live feed of the last thirty days only, with no archive. Useful for a storm that just happened, useless for an older date.
- NOAA tropical cyclone reports. The authoritative write-ups for named storms, and the right source for anything before 1996.
Records on this page were retrieved from NOAA on August 12, 2026. NOAA revises this database over time, so the linked official record is always the version that counts.
About this page
This is an index of public weather records. The data comes from the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information Storm Events Database, a public record of the United States government, and every row links to the official record so you can read the source yourself.
We are not NOAA and not the National Weather Service, we are not affiliated with them, and nothing here is endorsed by them. NOAA's own notice on this data says the National Weather Service does not guarantee its accuracy, because much of it comes from media, law enforcement, other agencies, private companies and members of the public, and it may not have been verified. Damage figures are broad estimates. Treat this table as a place to start, not as the last word.
This is not claim advice and it is not legal advice. Oahu Roof Support is not a licensed public adjuster and not a law firm. We do not represent homeowners against their insurance company, we do not negotiate claims, we do not decide what your date of loss is, and we cannot tell you what your policy covers. Your policy, your insurer, and the adjuster assigned to your claim decide those things. If you want someone to represent you on the claim itself, that role belongs to a licensed Hawaii public adjuster or an attorney, not to us.
Here is what we actually do. Art inspects the roof, photographs and documents what he finds, and puts it in writing. That documentation goes to you and you decide who else sees it. If repairs are needed, we coordinate a licensed contractor partner who does the work. We are not a licensed roofing contractor and we do not employ installation crews.
Two honest cautions. Go with the date that matches what actually happened at your house, not the one that looks most convenient. And if your storm is not in this table, that does not mean nothing happened, because this database does not catch everything.
The date is the easy part
Finding the date takes a minute. Showing what the storm did to your roof is the part that decides anything, and that is the part we do. Art gets on the roof, documents what is there, and puts it in a form you can use. If the work goes ahead, we coordinate a licensed contractor partner to do the installation.
- Roof inspection, free on the claim path, so you find out what you are dealing with before you file anything.
- Insurance claim help, the steps a storm claim actually goes through on Oahu.
- Storm damage repair and wind damage repair.
- Emergency tarping if it is leaking right now. That one does not wait.
- How wind damage claims work in Hawaii, and what to do after a Kona low.
