Top-tier waterproofing for commercial flat roofs. These single-ply membranes offer superior resistance to standing water, UV, and chemicals.

Single-Ply Membrane Roofing for Flat and Low-Slope Roofs

TPO and PVC are single-ply membranes: wide sheets of flexible roofing welded together with hot air into one continuous, watertight surface. They have become the standard covering for flat and low-slope roofs in Hawaii for two reasons. The heat-welded seams are stronger than the membrane itself, which removes the most common failure point of older flat-roof systems. And the bright white surface reflects the sun instead of absorbing it, which matters on an island where the roof takes intense UV all year and the air conditioning runs most days.

TPO or PVC?

The two materials look similar and install the same way, but they earn their keep differently. TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) is the workhorse: strong seams, excellent UV resistance, and the best value for most flat roofs. PVC costs more and brings superior resistance to chemicals, grease, and standing water, which is why it shows up over restaurant kitchens and on roofs with known ponding. On most Oahu homes and small commercial buildings, TPO is the right answer. PVC is the answer when the roof has a specific problem PVC solves.

Where Single-Ply Makes Sense on Oahu

Flat and low-slope sections are everywhere on the island once you start looking: carports, lanai covers, additions, and most commercial buildings. If your existing flat roof is struggling, the first question is whether it needs a new membrane at all. A roof that is aging but sound may be a candidate for a coating system instead, and localized damage may only need flat roof repair. When the membrane is truly at the end of its life, single-ply replacement is usually the most cost-effective long-term fix. For larger buildings, see our commercial roofing page; for the trade-offs across every low-pitch option, our low-slope roofing guide covers the full menu.

How We Work

Oahu Roof Support is an independent roofing consultant. We inspect and document your roof, tell you honestly whether repair, coating, or replacement makes sense, and coordinate installation through licensed contractor partners who specialize in single-ply systems and hold the manufacturer certifications that keep warranties valid. You get an advocate with no incentive to sell you a bigger job than the roof needs. Services provided consist of inspection support, consultation, and project coordination, not contracting activity under HRS §444-1.
